Lot 1480 FROM THE COLLECTION OF MR ZHANG ZHITAO
Mr. Zhang Zhitao (1912-1986) was secretary of the Singapore Sin Chew Daily newspaper. An admirer of calligraphy, he was a keen calligrapher himself and his calligraphy was used for the logos of two Singaporean newspapers. He also inscribed the walls of Tiger Balm Gardens, Singapore.
With a deep passion for Chinese arts and culture, Zhang was friends with artists and scholars, such as Gao Boyu, Guang Xia, Yu Dafu, Zhang Junmai, Cao Juren and Huang Yuemin . Having worked with Yu Dafu before the war, Zhang's father-in-law Qing Sheng also received a calligraphic scroll from Yu Dafu, which became the only surviving art work from Singapore during the Japanese invasion.
Zhang's friends Gao Boyu and Zeng Yimei told of Zhang's passion for collecting calligraphy by different artists. He collected such works for over half a century, and his collection displays both the breadth and depth of a scholar who was deeply passionate about calligraphy.
