Specialist note
The earliest recorded painting by Vinckboons is dated 1601. This work, dateable to circa 1604-10 is therefore an early work in the artist's oeuvre. During this period, the mannerist representation, with stylised leaves on the shimmering tree branches, are close to those of Gillis van Coninxloo. The villages are peopled with many generic and brightly coloured figures, in Vinckboon's painting at this time. Comparison can be made between the present lot and A Village Kermesse, Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1983, lot 135 ($52,800), and with Landscape with a Wedding, dated 1604, in the collection of Vittorio Duca, Milan.
