Eugène Michel was a master glass-engraver of the highest order who, without employing colour, was able to decorate the surface of a vase with drama and refinement. He favoured simple forms influenced by the Far East as is evident in the present example - its compressed form with twin-handles mounted on the shoulders. The subject matter here was taken from Greek and Roman mythology and depicts Neptune with his wife Amphitrite.
