The rectangular top with three-quarter pierced gallery, above a foliate-scrolled frieze set with a retractable velvet-lined writing slide, the similarly-decorated sides each with a drawer, on fluted legs tapering to toupie feet, the gallery molding engraved MILLET A PARIS, the lockplate stamped DUVIVIER/PARIS/77. FG. ST.ANTOINE

Specialist note

This finely constructed table à ecrire is based upon Jean-Henri Riesener's design commissioned circa 1780-1785 for Marie Antoinette. The popular model was frequently copied by the celebrated ébénistes of the 19th century, including Maison Millet and François Linke. An example by Linke, labeled index number 878, is illustrated C. Payne, François Linke: The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, p. 500.
