Each of baluster form, the flaring mouth flanked by tall rosette handles with acanthus terminals, finely painted with a central panel enclosing a ribbon-tied lute or a winged torchère and wreath within a hand-tooled canted gilt surround, the reverse with similar navette-shaped panels, the lower body with a band of long-stemmed flowers alternating with stiff-leaf tips, on a conforming socle and square ormolu base

Specialist note

When Brongniart became Director of the Manufacture de Sèvres in 1800, he introduced a series of new vases based on Ancient forms. Many of these were designed by his father, the architect Alexandre-Theodore Brongniart, and by Charles Percier. Among this series, the 'vase Fuseau' was a grand success. For a 1re grandeur example of the same form, see See B. Ducrot, Porcelaines et Terres de Sèvres, Musée National du Château de Compèigne, Paris, 1993, p. 55, no. 6.

Pierre Riton, whose mark of the initial R appears on the present vases, is recorded as a painter at Sèvres 1821-1860. The gilt initials TB also found on the vases are those of the as yet unidentified gilder.
