The central spreading pediment with foliate swags, flanked to each side by a black marble top, above a central door with a turquoise-ground plaque depicting Le goûter de l'Automne, after Boucher, with two further porcelain plaques, flanked to each side by a glazed door, the angles with male and female caryatids, above a breakfront apron and hoof-cast feet, the back with spiral cone feet, twice stamped to the carcass under the pediment and stamped HEUBÈS to the removeable pediment

Specialist note

Hubert-Joseph Heubès worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, establishing his magasin at 12, rue du Parc-Royal in 1854 and then at 3, rue de la Perle six years later. He took part in the Exposition Universelle of 1867 and was known for his pieces in imitation of 18th century models including those by Adam Weisweiler. Heubès created furniture mounted with lacquer panels and porcelain plaques often of larger proportions, effectively combining 18th century taste with 19th century demand. Works by Heubès of this scale and quality seldomly appear at auction, with one porcelain-mounted ebony bonheur du jour sold Christie's, New York, 11 March 1998, lot 311.
