Specialist note

Commissioned by Louis-Philippe in 1833, the original cire perdue bronze of Lion au Serpent (Salon de 1833) was cast by Honoré Gonon and measures 135 cm. high. It was shown at the 1836 Salon (n°1864) and placed in the gardens of the Tuileries. It is now in the Louvre. The first edition was cast by Leblanc-Barbedienne from 1905, offering the 'grandeur original' and three reductions of which the present lot is an example of the largest.
