A PAIR OF FRENCH ORMOLU AND PATINATED BRONZE CHENETS
LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Each modelled after the Medici lions, a paw resting on a ball, above a pierced rocaille shaped base
13½ in. (33 cm.) high; 16 in. (41 cm.) wide; 8½ in. (21.5 cm.) deep (2)

Specialist note

The original model for these lions was carved by Flaminio Vacca in the 16th Century, as a pendant for the Antique (which is modelled with its proper right paw on the ball). The pair once stood in the garden of the Villa Medici and are now on the steps of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.
