The bronze signed to the base 'CARRIER', on a spreading rectangular plinth centred by a clock dial signed 'LEMERLE-CHARPENTIER BRONZIER PARIS RUE CHARLOT 8', on a stepped base with ribbon-tied channelled molding, the twin barrel movement with rack striking to bell
29½ in. (75 cm.) high; 18½ in. (47 cm.) wide; 10¼ in. (26 cm.) deep

Specialist note

Hebe and Jupiter's Eagle was first exhibited by Carrier-Belleuse at the Salon of 1859 and was immediately popular with critics and the public alike. This composition was probably the first of the sculptor's works to adopt the Renaissance style and shows the influence of the Fontainebleau School. Another silvered-bronze cast, without the onyx clock base partnering the present lot, sold Christie's, London, 1 November 2001, lot 281 (£14,100).
