Specialist note

Richard Eurich loved sailing and he knew a great deal about fishing harbours, working vessels and their rigging, and this is apparent in Newlyn Harbour. He would study a scene, take detailed sketches that included notes about colouration, and then back at his studio would begin work on a canvas. His starting point was where the germ of the design lay, from which area the painting would develop outwards, each colour chosen carefully in order to balance the composition. Bradford Museums & Galleries own another similar painting, Newlyn, Cornwall, exhibited at the same 1938 show in the Redfern Gallery; their painting can be viewed on the Public Catalogue Foundation's website hosted by the BBC.
