Educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Oxford, Wren became rector of Fonthill Bishop in Wiltshire in 1620 and East Knoyle in 1623, where he lived with his family. It was there that his second son, the architect Sir Christopher Wren, was born. He was appointed chaplain to the king in 1628 before becoming Dean of Windsor in 1635. He was also register of the Order of the Garter and was a keen patron of the arts, overseeing the redecoration of the chancel at East Knoyle.
