Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827)

Rowlandson's strong satirical sense is demonstrated in this aptly named picture. Using the derogatory term placeman, which denotes one in a public office who uses it for private gain or reward, Rowlandson mocks the marriage market of high society with the young girl being bartered over by an unwelcome suitor and her chaperone.
