PIERRE DUBREUIL (1872-1946)
Lot 355 Dubreuil, a Pictorialist master of Modernist compositions, experimented relentlessly not only with printmaking techniques but also with picture construction. The smaller of these two prints was made by contact from the original negative and shows us the entire scene Dubreuil captured with his hand-held camera. The larger print, an enlargement also made from the original negative, isolates and expands a carefully chosen detail, presenting the viewer with a completely new and even more abstract composition whose atmospheric perspective and shallow depth of field are softened further by the porous and delicate Japanese tissue upon which the gelatin silver image lies.
