Specialist note

Probably the full-rigged merchantman Trelawney built at Liverpool in 1783 and owned by Watts & Co. Employed in the Jamaica trade, it would seem logical that this portrait of her marks her completion and probably her maiden voyage.

F.B. Cockett is the author of Early Sea Painters 1660-1730 and Peter Monamy 1681-1749 and His Circle, both published by the Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, in 1995 and 2000.
