inscribed and dated 'A HAPPY EASTER VIVIEN/FROM WOPPY/1916/20th April 1916/My dear Vivien - Thank you very much for your nice letter and/the drawing of the Prambulator it was very good: I hope you/will have a very happy Easter and that you will write/to me soon again' (lower centre)

Specialist note

This is a sketch of Orpen and Mrs St George's daughter Vivien, Easter 1916, when she was just over four years old. Emerging from a broken egg was a device that Orpen would often revert to when wishing someone a "Happy Easter". It was, however usually the artist himself that was hatched.
