Specialist note

A powerful depiction of a dignified Indian chief prepared for battle, 'Indian Warrior' is one of Alexander Phimister Proctor's most celebrated works. According to Proctor's autobiography, a small version of 'Indian Warrior' was originally modeled during his trip to the Blackfoot Sioux tribe reservation in Montana in 1895. In 1896, after Proctor was awarded the Rinehart Scholarship to study abroad, he decided to create the larger size and by 1898 castings of both the large and small versions were available in bronze. 'Indian Warrior' was exhibited at the 1898 Paris Salon and was awarded the gold medal for sculpture that year.
