The rectangular ormolu-molded top with a gilt-tooled brown leather writing surface and grotesque mask clasps, above a shaped frieze set with a central recessed drawer and flanking short drawers, the reverse with similar false drawers, each side centred with a Bacchic mask, on satyr mask-headed cabriole legs tapering to hoof-cast sabots, the locks stamped CT LINKE SERRURERIE PARIS, the undersides of the drawer handles incised LF and 788
30 in. (76.2 cm.) high, 55 1/8 in. (140 cm.) wide, 31 in. (78.8 cm.) deep

Specialist note

Produced in a variety of sizes, index number 133 was considered Linke's favorite design and the celebrated ébéniste worked at an example of the largest available in his personal at study at 32 Quai Henry IV in Paris (see inset illustration). Another example of this bureau was sold at Christie's, New York, 25 October 2007, lot 447 ($49,000).
