Specialist note

Stephen Ward was a talented portrait artist and many leading politicians and members of the Royal Family sat for him including the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Lord Snowdon. However, Ward is now most well known for his involvement in the Profumo affair. He was responsible for introducing Christine Keeler to John Profumo at the now infamous pool party held in July 1961 (a month after the present work was executed) at Lord Astor's home, Cliveden. Ward committed suicide in 1963.
