Specialist note
According to the Sotheby's catalogue of 2004 Dr. R.E.O Ekkart of the RKD, The Hague, confirmed the attribution of the male portrait to Cornelis van der Voort, by whom it is a youthful work (on the basis of a colour transparency). Dr. Ekkart believes that the female portrait belongs to an earlier Dutch tradition of portraiture, and is stylistically unconnected with her male companion.
