Specialist note

Winifred Nicholson began making regular painting trips to Greece in about 1961, and particularly liked Mycenae (Greek Mykenai) where the present work was painted. She wrote from Mycenae, 'It has been pitilessly cold, but now the flowers and the pink asphodels and the wild pear blossom are all out - and the sun gives a blessing as you come into it, ... and the sunlight by day and the great bright moon by night give you glowing colour and luminous shade' (A. Nicholson (ed.), Unknown Colour, Paintings, Letters, Writings by Winifred Nicholson, London, 1987, p. 232).

We are very grateful to Jovan Nicholson for providing the catalogue entry for this lot.
