AN AUSTRIAN SILVER ROYAL INKSTAND
MARK OF EG IN CUT-CORNERED RECTANGULAR PUNCH, 1866
Of shaped oval outline with lion mask and paw feet flanked by garlands, standing on an ancillary base, the central silver bottle of baluster form with four swans around the base, their wings outstretched, a cast seated putto either side flanking applied arms accollée on one side and an enigmatic monogrammed cartouche ensigned by a regal coronet on the other, the cover capped by a crown finial on reed and ribbon base

Specialist note

The arms are for the marriage of Christian, Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augensburg (1831-1917), of a senior branch of the Danish royal house and KG immediately after the wedding to Princess Helena Augusta (1846-1923), 5th child of Queen Victoria, at the Private Chapel, Windsor Castle on 5th July, 1866.
It is interesting to note that the Austrian marks on the inkstand were only introduced on 26th May, 1866.
