Specialist note

Jock Soto (1986) is a portrait of the well-known influential modern ballet dancer of the same name, who rose to fame in the early 1980s when he joined the New York City Ballet and danced with renowned ballerinas, while thriving within the New York arts scene, befriending Warhol amongst many others.

Fitting well into the artistic legacy of Andy Warhol's society portraits, the subject's delicate features, accentuated by smooth minimalistic lines, emit a sense of elegance and beauty, mirroring the delicate movements of ballet Soto is so well-known for. However his piercing eyes simultaneously remind the viewer of Warhol's obsession with fame, celebrity and youth, which remained a significant aspect of his career.
