The tilt top with scroll-carved and pierced raised gallery on vase-turned and spiral-fluted shaft with three leaf-carved downswept legs terminating in claw and ball feet, minor repairs to gallery
30 in. (76 cm.) high; 23 in. (58 cm.) wide

Possibly James Montgomery (1720-1803), later 1st Bt. of Stanhope, and by descent at Stobo and Kinross.

Specialist note

There are two strong candidates for the production of this tray: John Hodson of London, who is recorded as having supplied furniture for both Holkam Hall, Norfolk and Blair Castle, Perthshire; and the Edinburgh firm of John Schaw and Son, to whom a similar table at Blair with related octagonal tray-top is attributed (which had previously been attributed to Hodson); the Blair table is considered to be the one Schaw invoiced to James, 2nd Duke of Atholl in 1753 (A. Coleridge, 'John Hodson and some cabinet-makers at Blair Castle', The Connoisseur, April 1963, p. 230, pl. 16).

Another table with near identical tray-top was sold from The Prescott Collection, Christie's New York, 31 January 1981, lot 269.
