A GEORGE II MAHOGANY ARMCHAIR
CIRCA 1755, IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE
The serpentine top-rail flanked by padded arms with rocaille and foliate-carved supports, on similarly carved cabriole legs with scroll carved feet, covered in later floral needlework
39½ in. (100 cm.) high

Possibly acquired by James Montgomery (1720-1803) an eminent lawyer he was Lord Advocate from 1766-1775, MP for Peebles in 1768 and was appointed Chief Baron of the court of Exchequer, Scotland in 1775; he was created 1st Bt. of Stanhope in 1801, and by descent at Stobo and Kinross.

Specialist note

The unusual squared foliate arm terminal on this chair is directly related to those supplied by Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries (c. 1699-1768), for Dumfries House, Ayrshire in 1759. The Dumfries suite supplied by Chippendale included two settees, fourteen armchairs and two card tables.
