Specialist note
The majority of these sketches are dated from 1861 to 1865 when Wyllie was still a child, illustrating a remarkable and precocious talent, an eye for detail and a decisive sense of dramatic composition. At this stage of Wyllie's life, his interest in painting ships and the sea had not yet fully developed and it was during this time that he concentrated on the more atmospheric aspects of landscape and seascapes.
