Lot 1 MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MANUSCRIPTS
Lots 1 and 2 comprise 5 leaves and one bifolium from 12th-century liturgical manuscripts that are likely to have originated and remained in Salzburg where they were all acquired by the businessman, art lover and landscape painter Carl von Frey (1826-1896). They were part of the extensive, varied collection he kept in Freyburg, the 'Gothick' reconstruction on Mönchsburg in Salzburg that was his favourite residence.
All of the folios had served in binding later volumes or registers: lot 1 has a shelfmark CC 10 and a leaf in lot 2 was apparently used in the same series and has the cut remnants of CC 2. In 1893 the leaves were shown to Pater Willibald Hauthaler, later Abbot of St Peter's in Salzburg, who annotated them in red ink. They remained in Freyburg in the possession of the descendants of Frey until their purchase by the present owner.
The initials are characteristically Austrian in style and can be compared to work in manuscripts from St Peter's itself. The figures in the inhabited initials are compellingly close to some in the Abbey's three-volume Bible and may be by the same hand (Salzburg, Stiftbibliothek St. Peter, Cod.a.XII.18-20); for example see G. Swarzenski, Salzburger Malerei, ii, Pl.CXVI, fig.393, and Hl. Rupert von Salzburg 696-1996 , exh. cat., Salzburg, 1996, no 157.
