Specialist note

In the past, these pictures have been attributed to Nicolaes Maes and Gonzales Coques. According to Pieter Biesboer (formerly Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem, written communication, 9 September 2010), these two portraits were painted by Rembrandt's pupil Jan Victors. The sitters were once identified as Johan de Wit and his wife and son.
