PUCE INTERLACED L'S ENCLOSING DATE LETTER jj FOR 1786, PAINTERS MARKS FOR MME. GERARD AND GIRARD TO EACH PIECE, THE CREAM-JUG ALSO WITH UNIDENTIFIED PAINTER'S KK, VARIOUS INCISED MARKS
Painted with interlaced wreaths of pink briar roses and forget-me-nots alternately linked by ribbon-tied bows and tight bouquets, the wreaths between gilt-edged yellow bands variantly painted in brown with either delicate swags or laurel, comprising:
A two-handled lobed oval tray (plateau 'Hébert')
A footed cream-jug ((pot à lait 'a trois pieds')
A sugar-bowl and cover (pot à sucre 'Bouret', 2eme grandeur)
Two cups and saucers (gobelets litron et soucoupes, 3eme grandeur)
12 in. (30.4 cm.) wide, the tray

Specialist note

Madame Marie-Anne Gérard is recorded at Sèvres as a painter specializing in flowers and patterns and as a gilder 1775-1802. Etienne-Gabriel Girard is recorded as a gilder and flower painter active 1762-1800. Although both could have been responsible for the gilding on this service, as the marks are in puce and blue respectively, it is more likely that Mme. Girard painted swags and laurel vine on the yellow ribbons. Either could have have added the gilt lines.
