Specialist note
The impressively architectural form of this console table, with tapering uprights, elaborately carved apron with central mask and geometric frieze relates closely to tables illustrated by the dessinateur Pierre Le Pautre in his Livre de tables qui sont dans les apartements du Roy sur lesquelles sont poses les bijoux des Cabinet des Meédailles (published soon after 1689) . This work illustrated a series of giltwood consoles used to display the king's magnificent collection of silver, and replaced a suite of melted down silver furniture. Other closely related tables in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris are illustrated in S. de Ricci, Louis XIV und Regence, Stuttgart, 1929, p.74 and exhibited in Louis XIV Faste et Décors, cat. no. 101.
