THE PLATES PROBABLY FIRST HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY, THE JAR LATER
The plates painted with the arms of Hamilton, the Duke of Hamilton quartering Douglas, the crest with two antelope supporters, above the motto THROUGH, below the Duke's coronet, within blue scrolling foliage rims, the jar with berried leaves and scrolling blue borders
The plates 9½ in. (24.2 cm.) diam. (8)

Purchased by Albert Edward John, 7th Earl of Spencer (1892-1975) in 1920.

Specialist note

James, 5th Duke Hamilton married his third wife Anne, daughter of Edward Spencer in 1737. These plates were probably made at about this time; the 5th Duke of Hamilton died in 1743 and was succeeded by his son from his first marriage.
