The shield surmounted by a Knight's helm and scrolling foliage mounted later glazed case with inscribed plaque 'THESE ARMS WERE CARVED BY A SAILOR BELONGING TO "GARLAND" MAN OF WAR DURING MY STAY IN NORWAY ON ACCOUNT OF SHIPWRECK AO.1727 IN MY RETURN FROM SWEDEN S.POYNTZ', losses
16 in. (41.3 cm.) high

The Rt. Hon Stephen Poyntz (1685-1750) of Midgham, Berkshire and by descent either to his daughter Georgiana, 1st Countess Spencer (1737-1814) at Althorp; or to his grandson William Stephen Poyntz (1770-1840) whose daughter Elizabeth Georgiana Poyntz (1799-1851) married Frederick, 4th Earl Spencer (1798-1857); and by descent.

Specialist note

Stephen Poyntz (1685-1750) had a distinguished diplomatic career. In 1724 he became Envoy-Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sweden. On the formation of the household of the Duke of Cumberland, second son of King George II, Poyntz was appointed as the young Duke's governor and steward of the household.
