Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Francis Seymour (1819-1854), in profile to the right, in black coat, white shirt, black tied cravat; cloudy sky background
on ivory
oval, 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.) high, set in a gilt-metal bracelet with hinged cover to reveal miniature, the cover parcel-enamelled with monogram, the interior cover engraved 'Born Sepr. 14th 1819. Killed at Inkermann. [sic] Nor. 5th. 1854'

Adelaide Horatia Spencer, née Seymour, daughter of Lt.-Col. Charles Francis Seymour, the present sitter.
Charles Robert, 6th Earl Spencer (1857-1922); given to Lady Blanche Haygarth, cousin of the present sitter.
Brought to Althorp in 1922, probably by Hugh William, 5th Earl Fortescue (1888-1958) or Denzil George, 6th Earl Fortescue (1893-1977).

Specialist note

Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Francis Seymour of the 4th Division of the Scots Fusiliers Guards, was the eldest son of Colonel Sir Horace Beauchamp Seymour (see lot 281) and Elizabeth Malet Palk (1797-1827). He was the brother-in-law of Frederick, 4th Earl Spencer (1798-1857). Lt.-Col. Charles Francis Seymour was killed at the Battle of Inkerman, which took place during the Crimean War between Allied forces from Britain and France against the Imperial Russian Army.
