A LATE VICTORIAN BLACK-JAPANNED AND LIVERY-PAINTED FOUR-WHEEL RALLI CAR

With rectangular splayed splash-guard sides flanking back-to-back bench seats with green cloth-covered cushions and backrest, with slatted footwell and vertical dashboard, with open back, marked on each wheel hub 'MULLINER NORTHAMPTON', with rubber-rimmed wooden spoke wheels, extensive losses and overall cracking to the decoration, the upholstery in poor condition, with two swan-neck shafts and a pair of associated carriage lanterns in poor condition (not illustrated in the photograph)

Specialist note

The Ralli car is a variant of the dog-cart that became fashionable in the late 1890s. It is named for Pandia Ralli (1862-1924), of Ashtead Park, Surrey. He was the grandson of Pandia Ralli (1793-1865), the creator of the great Victorian mercantile house of Ralli Bros, and a dominant figure in Anglo-Greek relations in the 19th century.
