MID TO LATE 16TH CENTURY, PROBABLY FONTANA WORKSHOP
With mask terminals and snake handles, painted with the Triumph of Galatea, the nymph borne by Hippocampi, in a continuous seascape; broken socle and damages
16¼ in. (41.3 cm.) high

The collection of Joseph Marryat, sold Christie's, 9-16 February 1867, lot 884, (one of a pair). Purchased by John Poyntz, 5th Earl Spencer (1835-1910) for £44, and by descent to Charles Robert, 6th Earl Spencer (1857-1922) at Spencer House, where photographed on the chimney piece in the Dining Room in 1916 and in Lord Spencer's Room (The Palm Room) in 1920.
