Specialist note

The maker whose mark appears on one of the toilet boxes was a prolific and accomplished silversmith. The majority of his work is decorated in the idiosyncratic chinoiserie style which developed following the establishment of the East India Company in 1600. The fashion for Chinoiserie reach its height in the last two decades of the 17th century with the import and production of lacquered furniture, porcelain and textiles in the Chinese style.
