Marked Fabergé, with the workmaster's mark of August Hollming, St Petersburg, 1904-1908
Rectangular with rounded sides, reeded overall, the cover applied with a rose-cut diamond-set crowned stylized initial 'A' with entwined metal anchor and with cabochon sapphire thumb-piece, with integral vesta compartment enclosing the integral chained chord attachment, marked inside cover and base
3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) wide

Specialist note

The crowned initial 'A' entwined with an anchor is possibly the cypher of Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich (1850-1908), the fourth son of Emperor Alexander II and his first wife, Maria Alexandrovna. Alexis was admiral general and supreme chief of the Russian Imperial fleet.
