Specialist note
This view of a town (possibly Chalon) across the river Saone was painted on a short holiday in Burgundy in June 1961. Deeply affected by the death of Vanessa Bell in early April, Grant was taken to France by his friend the painter Edward le Bas for a change of scene and it was here that he began to paint again. Farm Buildings, lot 41, was painted on the same holiday.
