Specialist note

Related to Delacroix's painting of the same subject, presented at the 1845 Salon, now at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon (Johnson, op. cit., pp. 106-108, no. 281; II, pl. 99). Johnson wrote that Delacroix, along with his collaborator on the painting, Louis de Planet, used the present lot as a working drawing. Another more preliminary drawing of the same subject is in the Louvre.
