Depicted in classical robes, her right hand holding Hercules' club, his lion pelt draped over a pillar, inscribed 'Dumaige 1873' and '23345'

Specialist note

Dumaige studied under Jean Jacques Feuchère and Dumont, exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1863-1886. The current work depicts the Lydian queen Omphale. In classical mythology Hercules became a slave to Omphale as a punishment for the slaying of his friend Iphitus.
