signed 'Low' (lower left) and inscribed 'Used-up partners: "Go on, Stanley. If you can keep step with her, you're a better/dancer than either of us."' (lower centre) and variously inscribed throughout and inscribed by another hand 'With every good wish to the new partner./Ramsay MacDonald 6.7.'23' (on the mount)
pencil, pen anc black ink and wash and watercolour heightened with white, unframed
9½ x 11 1/8 in. (24.2 x 28.3 cm.); together with another unframed cartoon 'Tales of the dominions' by the same hand (2)

the first given to Stanley Baldwin, 1st Earl of Bewdley by Ramsey MacDonald, 6th July 1923.

Specialist note

In 1923 the French President Poincaré sent troops to occupy the Ruhr in an attempt to coerce the Germans into paying their reparations, which had been part of the agreement of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, and the resolution of this breaking of the treaty was one of the first issues Baldwin faced when he came into office.
