Inverted bell shaped on spreading foot, with scroll handles, the detachable cover with baluster finial, applied with a silver medallion depicting King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, engraved with an inscription, marked near rim and on cover bezel

The inscription reads 'To George Edward Alexander Edmund 4th Son of George, Prince of Wales and Victoria Mary, Princess of Wales from his Grandparents and Sponsors King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at his Christening at Windsor Castle January 26th 1903'

A christening gift to Prince George from his grandparents and sponsors King Edward VII (r.1901-1910) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925).

Specialist note

The Times of 27 January 1903 recorded that 'The Private Chapel at Windsor Castle where the Royal Christening took place yesterday, was adorned with flowers from the King's conservatories, and presented an extremely beautiful apperance. The gold font was used with ordinary water, and not water from the Jordan.'

The Prince was christened by the Bishop of Oxford. He had six sponsors, the godfathers being his gradfather King Edward VII, Prince Waldemar of Denmark, who was unable to attend, but was represented by Prince Charles of Denmark and Prince Louis of Battenberg. The godmothers were his Grandmother Queen Alexandra, the Tsarina of Russia, respresented by Princess Victoria, and Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein. A reception in the Green Drawing Room and luncheon followed the service. A toast to the prince was held at both the luncheon and the dinner that evening.
