Specialist note
In 334 BC Alexander the Great launched a pan-Hellenic attack on the Persian Empire, a long-standing enemy since their invasion of Greece in 490 BC. Upon landing in Asia Minor, he undertook a pilgrimage to the ancient site of Troy where he visited the tomb of Achilles to make offerings and pray for a successful military campaign.
