Specialist note

The identity of the maker of this Symbolist masterpiece is unknown, though the ivory figure of a woman is thought to have been carved by sculptor Edmond-Henri Becker. His heroine rises into the night as the apotheosis of beauty lifted by bat wings to the moon and stars.
