Specialist note
With the onset of the Second World War Laura and Harold Knight, avoiding the bombing in London, moved to Malvern where they stayed at the Colwell hotel. A valley at evening, which relates closely to Harvest (Adelaide, Art Gallery of South Australia), is a reflection of the peace and solace found in the surrounding countryside and contrasts sharply with the industrial subjects, often painted in arduous conditions, the she was commissioned to paint as a War Artist.
