Reference 5059 was introduced in 2002 to replace reference 5050 (see lot 2143 and 2326). Reminiscent of its predecessor, reference 5059 possesses the intriguing complication of a perpetual calendar mechanism with retrograde date hand, and is one of the very few perpetual calendar wristwatches with sweep centre seconds. Furthermore, it is united with another venerable Patek Philippe tradition - the "officer's"-style case, featuring a hinged gold dustcover that protects the sapphire crystal display back.

The model was available in all precious metal with Roman numerals on a porcelain-white dial. Production ceased in 2006 and was replaced by the reference 5159, currently available in white gold and yellow gold.
