Specialist note
Matthew Robinson Boulton (1770-1842), son of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), the great entrepreneur and famed manufacturer of Sheffield plate, purchased Great Tew Park in 1815, which he subsequently furnished and decorated. Many of the Sheffield-plated lots from the Great Tew Park sale in 1987 were manufactured by Matthew Boulton & Co. Unmarked Sheffield plate presumably would have been sourced from the family firm.
