Specialist note

cf. P. Jousse, Georges Jouve, Paris, 2006, pp. 48-49, 167 for other examples of this ashtray.

During the 1950s, Georges Jouve frequently collaborated with his good friend, the well-known furniture designer Mathieu Matégot. The 'Bear's Paw' ashtray, in particular, was designed to go with Matégot's perforated metal furniture. The model later became known as the 'Matégot' Ashtray. It came in a variety of glazes that were either crackled, glossy or matte.
