AN ITALIAN MARMO ROSSO FIGURE OF ANTINUOUS

Modelled as an Egyptian kneeling figure holding a tablet displaying hyroglyphs, mounted on a verde marble plinth base
11 in. (27.5 cm.) high

Specialist note

This figure derives from the famous ancient sculpture of the Emperor Hadrian's favourite companion, Antinuous, which had been rediscovered at Hadrian's villa in 1740. Antinuous had drowned in the river Nile and was posthumously celebrated as a demi-god, by the Emperor, who was famously fascinated with Egypt.
