Lot 1 The Sunday Sale - Property from the Collection of the Late David and Jill Allibone, removed from Hemsted Toll, Benenden, Kent (Lots 1-119); and The Collection of the Late Michael Renshaw, Esq. (Lots 120-192)
David and Jill Allibone married in 1956 and moved into a flat in Emperor's Gate, London W7 which they furnished from the local auction house, Christie's South Kensington and from house sales which David organised on behalf of clients of his practice, Allibone's Solicitors, Kingsway, WC2. Together, their interests centred around ceramics and antique furniture, and Jill's pre-occupation with all things Persian, something she retained from her childhood in Abadan.
In 1966 they bought Hemsted Toll in Kent. Jill, an art historian, completed her PhD on the architect Anthony Salvin and joined the Victorian Society, so beginning her fascination with the antiquarian, gothic and all things Victorian. David's focus was their ceramics Collection, with a particular passion for the output of John Shorthose /Shorthose and Heath of Hanley, Staffordshire. The Allibones amassed a large and impressive Collection of Shorthose which Christie's is delighted to offer here alongside works of art, pictures, furniture and watercolours.
