Specialist note

In 1915 Goodwin wrote that he had 'painted most of the day from old studies of Freybourg which brought back once more to me that endlessly picturesque city. Ruskin once showed me a little water-colour he had made from his hotel window, looking down straight on to the malachite-green water, over the suspension bridge on to a wonderful group of old red-roofed houses, where the river runs through a dark archway' (17 January 1915 from the The Diary of Albert Goodwin, R.W.S., 1883-1927, London, 1934, p. 289).
